The texts of Lutheran pastor (later professor of German literature), poet and novelist Eduard Mörike (1804-75) form one of the cornerstones of Wolf’s output, with his compositional confidence reaching its first high point at the age of 28 with the 53 settings he made of the poet in the year 1888 alone – often at the rate of three songs in one single day.
