Born in 1868 in San Francisco, Denis O'Sullivan studied in Italy and Paris before making his debut with the Carl Rosa Company in Dublin. He became known as a champion of Irish folk music – both in Ireland, where he performed yearly at festivals around the country, and in England where he organised singing societies to increase the popularity of traditional Irish song.

This Wigmore Hall debut was the first of several concert appearances he made here before his untimely death in 1908 and consisted of a widely varied programme of folk song settings, premières of songs by Liza Lehmann and Peter Cornelius, and more traditional works by Schumann and Schubert.
