The Edinburgh-based ensemble performs four of the six cantatas brought together under the title Christmas Oratorio, and which Bach would have performed one cantata per day, rather than all six at once. Despite much of the composition having been conceived for other contexts and then provided with new words, the Biblical narrative maintains a strong unifying framework.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
