The American mezzo-soprano Eleanor Cleaver studied in Paris with Enrico Delle Sedie, and made her Wigmore Hall debut in this evening concert alongside fellow pupil Ingo Simon, whom she would later marry. The pair frequently appeared together, although reviews were often far kinder to her than they were to him – of his performance in this recital The Times claimed ‘he has the merit of good intentions, but of little beyond’.

Also making her Wigmore Hall debut was Wilma Neruda, Lady Hallé, one of the most prominent violinists of the late nineteenth century. Born in Brno in 1838, her performing career spanned six decades and made her so popular that even Sherlock Holmes attended one of her concerts, in the Conan Doyle novel A Study in Scarlet.
