The Czech pianist Ella Spràvka studied at the Vienna Conservatory before coming to London in the late 1890s, where her solo performances were well received. The following year she would return to Wigmore Hall to perform in a concert with the baritone and champion of Bohemian music Bogea (or Boza) Oumiroff, with whom she performed for many years in duet and chamber recitals and whom she later married.

Harry Plunket Greene, who had previously appeared in one of Wigmore Hall's opening recitals, was born in Dublin in 1865 and studied in Stuttgart and Florence before making his debut in London in 1888. During the following years he made the British concert and oratorio stage his own, creating the title role in Parry's Job and performing in the première of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius.

Opening and closing this evening concert were piano duets performed by Ella Spràvka and Margaret Brooke, the Ranee (or queen consort) of Sarawak in Borneo, then an independent kingdom under British rule. Associated with many significant literary figures at the time, she was the dedicatee of The Young King in Oscar Wilde's collection of fairy tales A House of Pomegranates.
