Esther Palliser was born in Pennsylvania in 1872 to a musical family and studied first with her father and then with Mathilde Marchesi in Paris. A successful career in light opera followed, including performances with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company both in America and in England, where she played the role of Rowena in the first production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Ivanhoe in 1891. As the turn of the century approached she appeared more often as a solo recitalist, making her Wigmore Hall debut in this evening concert where she gave premières of songs by (among others) Maude Valérie White and Liza Lehmann.

Also making their first appearances at Wigmore Hall were some of the period's leading chamber players: cellist May Mukle, who went on to huge international success; Emil Kreuz, German string player, composer and conductor, soon to become assistant musical director at Covent Garden; and the distinguished English clarinettist Charles Draper, here joining the composer in the first performance of Richard H. Walthew's Meditations.
