Poets of the ancient world wrote of great feasts accompanied by music, connecting with a tradition rooted in distant prehistory.

Telemann’s Tafelmusik belongs to a genre first named in the 1500s. The German composer published three sets of ‘table music’ in 1733, the second of which opens with a bold overture and suite for trumpet, oboe and strings and includes a quartet, concerto, trio sonata and solo sonata.
