The two opening concerts of what was then the Bechstein Hall were held on Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June 1901, with admission being by invitation only.

The performers in this first concert were an impressive group guaranteed to draw an audience, including the legendary Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, virtuoso pianist and composer Ferrucio Busoni (one of the artists promoted by Bechstein at the time), and the German tenor Raimund von Zur-Mühlen, whose legacy of bringing the Liederabend to an international audience would change the shape of song recitals in Britain throughout the 20th century.

The young Hamilton Harty was to become one of the most familiar faces at Wigmore Hall, appearing here as an accompanist several times a year; in this concert he was one of two, the other being Victor Beigel, a pianist and singing teacher whose pupils included Lauritz Melchior.
