A student of the composer and teacher H. Chilver-Wilson, Herbert Brown was in 1901 at the beginning of a solid career as a soloist, going on to appear several times at the Promenade Concerts and in a number of festivals and oratorio performances throughout the UK during the ensuing decade. For this recital of art song (with some Lieder and arias, including Count Almaviva's blistering Vedrò mentr'io sospiro from Le nozze di Figaro) he was joined by the young cellist Constance Vipan in her international debut, as well as pianist Maude Rihll and violinist Sarah Fennings.

Fennings was born in 1873 and studied with August Wilhelmj and Otakar Ševcík, making her solo recital debut in 1896. Praised for her tone and expressiveness, she also taught at Trinity College of Music where her pupils included Harry Blech. Maude Rihll, here making her only appearance at Wigmore Hall, was a pupil of Tobias Matthay and the dedicatee of his Monothemes Op. 13.
