Born in Canada in 1862, Hope Morgan studied in Paris with Mathilde Marchesi, whose other pupils included Nellie Melba, Emma Calvé and Mary Garden. Between 1895 and 1908 she gave successful recitals throughout Europe, America and Canada, before retiring from the concert stage to become a teacher.

This concert, in which she gave the first London performance of Loewe's Goethe setting Canzonette, was shared with violinist Dettmar Dressel and pianist Adine O'Neill. Dressel had studied with August Wilhelmj as a teenager, while O'Neill (wife of the British composer Norman O'Neill) had been a pupil of Clara Schumann and would go on to count Imogen Holst among her own students.
