Three major sonatas from the two composers who enjoyed a close personal friendship. Schumann’s Second Violin Sonata (1851) quotes a German chorale – ‘Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ’ -- in its second movement. Brahms’s own Second Violin Sonata was written in the summer of 1886 and quotes no fewer than three of the composer’s own songs. In 1895 he made his own arrangement for viola of a work whose first version the previous year took the form of a clarinet sonata.
