Thematic economy and formal unity are common to the works in the Jerusalem Quartet’s lunchtime programme.

Beethoven builds the elaborate first and slow movements of his Op. 18 No. 2 from simple melodic ideas; Bartók, meanwhile, prefaces the four movements of his String Quartet No. 6 with the same melancholy theme and uses it as the foundation for the work’s introspective finale.
