The Sanskrit/Pali word Saṃsāra refers to the cycle of death and birth and its connection to life in the material world, associated with the idea that individuals are born and reborn in different realms and forms. It is exemplified here in Schumann’s cycle of love and bereavement, as well as Fauré’s largest song cycle, based on symbolist texts by Charles von Lerberghe that explore Eve’s journey from the Garden of Eden to her reabsorption into the universe.

  • Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
      • Frauenliebe und -leben Op. 42
  • Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)
      • La chanson d’Eve Op. 95
      • Three songs by Clarke
