Kelley Cole and David Baxter had given their first Wigmore Hall recital together in June of 1901 and on their return for this afternoon concert were joined by the English pianist and composer Kathleen Bruckshaw, who had also made two previous solo appearances.

The programme here highlights the strengths of both singers – Baxter was known for his performances of Lieder and Scottish folk music, while Cole was often commended for his unusual song choices, which in this concert included the first London performances of works by Hans Hermann and Harriet Ware. Walther's aria Am stillen Herd from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg was another rarity, and was not to be heard here again until 1914.
