English contralto Lucia Fydell was born in the 1870s and by this Wigmore Hall debut in 1901 had appeared in several mixed recitals around the country, to varied reviews. She shared this afternoon concert with the successful English tenor Gregory Hast, and both performed a diverse group of songs covering several centuries; this was the first time works by John Blow, Walter Rabl or Paisiello were heard at Wigmore Hall.

Also making their first appearances here in this concert were the German pianist, teacher and composer Rudolf Zwintscher, and the influential French violinist and composer Émile Sauret, then professor at the Royal Academy of Music.
