Born Magda Zahn in 1872, German mezzo-soprano and contralto Magda von Dulong (sometimes Magda Losser) studied with Amalie Joachim and the Hungarian opera singer Etelka Gerster, whose other pupils included Lotte Lehmann and Clara Butt. She became a successful concert artist in Germany and in 1896 married the tenor Franz Henri von Dulong, until then an amateur singer; turning to the professional stage, in the ensuing years he sang for both Queen Victoria and her daughter, the then Empress of Germany.

Together they were feted for their duet recitals, and in this joint Wigmore Hall debut they performed duets by Schumann, Cornelius, and the contemporary composer Robert Kahn, as well as Lieder by Richard Strauss and Felix Weingartner.
