When he died in 1828 Schubert left behind a number of songs which Tobias Haslinger published as the composer’s ‘Swan-Song’ the following year. Not a cycle in the manner of Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, the collection nevertheless contains many of the composer’s finest lyric inspirations and provides a genuinely satisfying experience as an artistic entity.
