Three outstanding works of the quartet literature in the second programme by the increasingly admired Korean ensemble. The only minor-key work in the set of six quartets the composer dedicated to Haydn, Mozart’s K421 is thought to date from 1783. The Mendelssohn work – his first mature quartet, despite its number – was nevertheless composed when he was just 18 and quotes his own song ‘Ist es wahr?’, deliberately recalling Beethoven’s famous ‘Muss es sein?’ question in his Op. 135 quartet.
