In the summer of 1823 Schubert discovered a new volume of verse by Wilhelm Müller and was immediately inspired to set its sequence of poems as his first song cycle. Die schöne Müllerin recounts the unhappy tale of a young apprentice’s love for a miller’s daughter. The work charts the tragic course of his rejection, despair and suicide.
