In a series of 15 works written between 1938 and 1974, Shostakovich produced one of the great cycles for the medium, works that quickly entered the repertoire and whose significance as more private statements than the more public symphonies gave him the opportunity to voice more inward thoughts. The Carducci’s performance of the cycle around the world won it a Royal Philharmonic Society award in 2016, and the quartet has also begun to record the sequence.
