The American violinist Sigmund Beel was born in California in 1863 and studied with Joseph Joachim at the Hochschule in Berlin. He soon became a well-received chamber and concerto performer both in Europe and in America, where in the 1890s his Saturday 'popular' concert series with pianist Mrs Carr was the first of its kind in San Francisco.

In this Wigmore Hall debut, as well as performances of Paganini, Sinding and the Bach Chaconne, he gave the English première of Violin Sonata Op. 20 by American composer Arthur Foote.
