Remembered today as a composer, but in his lifetime also highly regarded as a music theorist, novelist, translator and even as a lawyer, Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722) was JS Bach’s predecessor as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. He held the post he eventually handed on to Bach from 1701-21 – though finding the job, according to scholar Willi Apel, ‘as vexatious and difficult’ as did his successor.
