Known as the 'Devonshire Nightingales', sisters Florence and Bertha Salter studied in Paris and had spent the last few years of the nineteenth century touring the United Kingdom together with great success. Their Wigmore Hall debut reflected the variety of their vocal talents, with Florence taking on Rossini's spirited aria Una voce poco fa as well as songs by Delibes and Alban Claughton, while Bertha sang French, German and English works including Elgar's Where corals lie.

Also making their first appearances at Wigmore Hall were the distinguished Hungarian violinist Tivadar Nachéz and the young Sybil Thorndike, then a concert pianist but now known for her outstanding career in theatre and film, and as the actress for whom Bernard Shaw wrote the title role in his play Saint Joan.
