The message in this programme is one of peace, the longing for it and the beauty, innocence and simplicity that can result from it. With the exception of Schoenberg – whose work written in 1907 seems way ahead of its time harmonically – the composers took their inspiration from the Second World War, whether by direct pleas for peace, liberation and freedom or simply by declaring their faith and praying for peace and humanity to reign supreme.
