Beethoven’s charming early quartet is followed by Mozart’s intensely introspective K421. Webern’s astonishingly expressive Bagatelles take all of three and a half minutes, but Schoenberg describes Webern as being able to ‘express a novel in a single gesture’.

In contrast is the luxurious expansiveness of Tchaikovsky’s third quartet.
