Echoes of Bach and Handel sound at the opening of The Myrthen Ensemble’s Schubert programme.

There are traces, too, of Beethoven in the quartet ‘Hymne an den Unendlichen’, a rousing setting of words by Schiller. The ‘Morgenlied’ and its companion ‘Abendlied’, both written on the same day, appear to have been composed in February 1816, while Schubert was still working as a schoolteacher.
