It is hard to overestimate the importance of Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose birth 150 years ago we celebrate this year. His much-loved output played a central role in the resurgence of British music in the first half of the 20th Century. Combined with his tireless industry, his exploration of folk music and the work of earlier English composers laid the foundations for a nationwide revival of music-making, both professional and amateur, whose impact is felt to this day.
