It is hard to overestimate the importance of Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose birth 150 years ago we celebrate this year. Combined with his tireless industry, his exploration of folk music and the work of earlier English composers laid the foundations for a nationwide revival of music-making, both professional and amateur, whose impact is felt to this day.
