Theo Lierhammer was born in Lviv (now part of Ukraine) and settled in Vienna, where later in life he would also teach at the Musikhochschule (with pupils including Otto Edelmann and Keith Falkner), after several years teaching at the Royal Academy of Music. He was known for his Lieder recitals, although this Wigmore Hall debut is more international, including songs by Chaminade and Jan Gall as well as a piece by the Australian composer George H. Clutsam, who accompanied the concert.

Irish pianist Ethel Sharpe, later Ethel Hobday, studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. She would go on to share the stage with a number of significant chamber performers, among them Lionel Tertis, Albert Sammons and Adila and Jelly d'Arányi, and made early recordings of piano quintets with the Spencer Dyke Quartet and the London String Quartet.
