'You can have no idea,’ wrote Brahms in 1872, ‘what it’s like to hear such a giant always marching along behind you!’; but as the collaborative ensemble directed by Hugo Ticciati will demonstrate, Beethoven’s daunting inheritance could also be positive – certainly the case with Brahms’ mighty Op. 1 and his bracing Piano Quintet.
