The six unaccompanied cello suites by J S Bach have held a unique place in the baroque canon since they were reappraised by Pablo Casals in the 1930s.

Until then, they were admired but with reservations ( that Schumann ‘completed’ them with accompaniments says it all ). Today, they tend to be worshipped with the reverence shown to religious icons; and there’s no shortage of explanatory, often spiritual theories that interpreters read into their austere, mesmeric intimacy.

Colin Carr will doubtless have his own views as he plays them over two concerts here at Wigmore Hall in what will surely prove a highlight of the season.
