Overview

Completed in the summer of 1946, Prokofiev’sFirst Violin Sonata was seen by one earlycritic as a hymn to the Russian ‘people’sfreedom and strength’.

Its tragic tonecertainly reflects the fate of the millions ofSoviet citizens destroyed during the SecondWorld War. Part of the work’s first movement, suggested its composer, should sound ‘likethe wind in a graveyard’.

Nikolaj Znaider, oneof today’s foremost violinists and a musicianof jaw-dropping versatility, prefaces Prokofiev’scomplex score with Beethoven’s vivacious, uplifting Violin Sonata No. 2.
