Overview

In 1812 Schubert made two bold attempts to set ‘DerGeistertanz’, Friedrich von Matthisson’s vivid depictionof nocturnal spirits at play in a graveyard.

The youngcomposer’s feeling for supernatural scenes and Gothicromance also flows through his dramatic setting of the38 verses of ‘Adelwold und Emma’, remarkable even bythe near-miraculous standards of Schubert’s songsfrom 1815.
