Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams continues hiscomplete Beethoven cycle at Wigmore Hall bytackling one of the most formidable musicalmonuments in the piano literature, theall-encompassing, strikingly complex‘Hammerklavier’.
According to Beethovenscholar Lewis Lockwood, the work signalled‘a turning point… in the history of the pianosonata’.
Williams prefaces the work withtwo contrasting compositions, includingthe highly charged Piano Sonata No. 27 inE minor, and Beethoven’s final work forpiano, the Op. 126 Bagatelles.
