The English Concert returns to Wigmore Hall withguest director Robert Howarth to perform two suitesfrom French opera-ballets, Marin Marais’s Alcyoneand Rameau’s Les Boréades.
This typically inventiveprogramme challenges preconceptions of baroqueand classical timelines: Les Boréades, a landmarkof high baroque opera, was written in 1763, whilethe 30-year-old Haydn was developing foundationsof the new classical style in Vienna.
