    Overview

    Leipzig’s prosperous merchants supported a rich musical culture.Recent scholarship suggests that Bach wrote his Flute Sonata inE minor during his early years in the city.

    Copenhagen-born Niels Gade,who succeeded Mendelssohn as director of the Leipzig Conservatoryin 1847, modelled his Fantasiestücke Op. 43 on pioneering ‘fantasypieces’ by his friend Schumann.
