Immerse yourself in the Americanstyles that became a fresh andvibrant force in the music of the20th-century. Explore the film musicof Hollywood, featuring BernardHerrmann’s scores for such iconicfilms as Hitchcock’s Psycho andNorth by Northwest, as well as thework of composers who fled fromHitler’s Europe for the United Statesincluding Erich Korngold, hailed as agenius by Mahler when he was stillonly a child. We look at the reciprocalinfluences between European andAmerican composers exemplified bythe relationship between Gershwinand Ravel. These study afternoonsare presented by composer JulianPhilips and pianist Laura Roberts,alongside eminent British film scholar Ian Christieand student performers from theGuildhall School of Music & Drama.
