    Overview

Haydn’s Op. 33 set of string quartets has several nicknames, the most common of which is the ‘Russian’ quartets, because Haydn dedicated the quartets to the Grand Duke Paul of Russia. No. 3 gets its own nickname from the bird-like repeated notes in the first violin part at the opening. The nickname for the Schubert work comes from the second movement, which is based on a theme from the composer’s incidental music for Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern (Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus), a play by Helmina von Chézy performed in Vienna in 1824.
