Overview

To celebrate Florilegium’s 30th anniversary this year, the group is presenting two concerts of favourite chamber programmes by Haydn and Bach. For many years Florilegium has explored the works of JS Bach, from his intimate solo suites and partitas, to larger scale oratorios and passions. For this second performance in celebration of its anniversary, the ensemble presents trio sonatas by the great master, a genre that is modestly represented considering his large output. This programme offers insight into some of the vivid colours and intimate textures that make his small collection of chamber music so appealing and stimulating to perform. Together with the impressive trio sonata from his Musical Offering which was dedicated to King Frederick the Great of Prussia, the programme includes separate trio sonatas for two flutes and two violins with continuo. The continuo team who play such a supportive role in these trio sonatas also has an opportunity to shine in one of Bach’s virtuosic sonatas for viola da gamba and obligato harpsichord.
