Chineke! Orchestra makes a welcome return to Wigmore Hall, with a trademark eclectic programme. The repertoire ranges from an early string quartet by the French-Afro-Caribbean composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St Georges to a work by the English mixed-race composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, written when he was only 20. Chineke!’s programme also includes more recent works by American composers Trevor Weston, Valerie Coleman and Matthew Evan Taylor, and a repeat performance of Errollyn Wallen’s Nnenna, which it premièred at Wigmore Hall in 2019. As well as his famous letters, Ignatius Sancho wrote four books of songs and lively dance music, including this collection of Minuets, Cotillons & Country Dances. He was the first composer of African descent to publish music in the European tradition, and these pieces, published in 1775, show how he managed this cultural balancing act. Florence Price’s collection of Folksongs in Counterpoint include arrangements of 'Calvary', 'Clementine', 'Drink to me only with thine eyes' and 'Swing low, sweet chariot'.
