The first of Louis Lortie and Hélène Mercier’s survey of music for piano duet and two pianos starts with music by two giants of the Classical era. Mozart’s charming Andante and variations is for piano duet whereas his great K488 sonata is for two pianos. The Fantasia in F minor by Franz Schubert, D940, for piano duet, is one of Schubert's most important piano works, composed in 1828, the last year of his life, and dedicated to his pupil Caroline Esterházy.
