Overview

Every great composer is influenced by his or her predecessors and in turn influences others. One of the great exponents of the harpsichord reveals Bach’s own lineage in works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621), Hans Leo Hässler (1564-1612), Samuel Scheidt (1587-1664), Bach’s cousin Johann Christoph (1642-1703), Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), and Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722), and the continuation of elements of his style within the works of his sons Wilhelm Friedemann (1710-84) and Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-88).
