Overview

Works from three different periods of Beethoven’s creativity. The first of his canonical sequence dates from between 1798 and 1800; according to his friend Carl Amenda the slow movement drew its inspiration from the final scene of Romeo and Juliet. The first of the ‘Razumovsky’ quartets (1808) incorporates a genuine ‘Thème russe’ as the basis of its finale. Op. 127 (1825) is the first of the celebrated late sequence that represents one of the summits of the genre.
