Overview

A mixed programme of smaller pieces, including the 1943 A Room for piano, the 1949-50 String Quartet (which, Cage said, ‘is like the opening of another door; the possibilities implied are unlimited’), its close successor the 6 Melodies (1950), the 1947 ballet for piano The Seasons – influenced by Indian conceptions of its subject – and Branches (1976), whose instruments are pods, cacti and other plant materials.
