Overview

Vocal ensemble Siglo de Oro have collaboratedwith Dr Daniel Trocmé-Latter (University ofCambridge) to bring to life a mysterious motetanthology from the late 1530s. Dr Trocmé-Latter'sresearch has shed light on this sacred music, which was assembled by the Milanese composerHermann Matthias Werrecore and sent to thepublisher Peter Schoeffer in Strasbourg whereit was printed in a set of five partbooks. In doingso, the repertoire not only crossed the Alps, but became cross-confessional, travelling fromstaunchly Catholic Milan to a newly Protestant one. What then was the purpose of publishing a motetbook in a German imperial city where Latin choralsinging no longer took place?

Patrick Allies is joined by Dr Trocmé-Latter toexplore the mysterious motet anthology that willbe performed in the lunchtime concert.
