Overview
Britten’s Second Quartet received its première at Wigmore Hall on 21 November 1945 as part of a concert marking exactly 250 years since the death of Henry Purcell, to whose chaconnes the third and final movement of the Britten piece is a conscious homage. Britten’s own birthday and St Cecilia’s Day were celebrated one day later.
