Overview
Written when he was just 18, Mendelssohn’s first mature quartet (1827) emulates Beethoven’s Op. 135 in quoting the words ‘Ist es wahr?’ (‘Is it true?’), from his own song Op. 9 No. 1. Dating from 1904-5, Schoenberg’s First Quartet is a work of considerable substance, while Darius Milhaud’s charming 1922 example is a mere nine minutes long.
