American critic Alex Ross has suggested that the Canadian virtuoso ‘is admired for his monstrously brilliant technique and his questing, deep-thinking approach’ – something readily apparent in his exploration of corners of the repertoire rarely entered by other pianists. Of his recording of the Dukas rarity, Gramophone wrote: ‘Hamelin, one needs hardly say, makes light of any difficulty, clarifying complex textures and subtly highlighting different voices with myriad keyboard colours.’ The pianist’s own suite was unveiled in 2021.
