Overview

Mélanie Hélène 'Mel' Bonis, born in Paris in 1858, broke the shackles of class and gender that prevented so many women from entering the near-exclusive male club of French arts and letters. Encouraged by her teacher César Franck (and discouraged by her parents), she achieved a belated breakthrough with her songs. The RCM’s recital surveys her creative life, her affair with the poet and music critic Amédée Landély Hettich, and the secrets the couple kept.
