Schools
At Wigmore Hall our vision is for schools to have equitable access to transformative creative experiences. Our current Schools offer includes our Partner Schools Programme, a pilot project in an Alternative Provision setting, specially designed series of Schools Concerts for EYFS and Key Stages 1 and 2, a range of free resources, live streams and activities for teachers and learners available to download from My Music Hub and free tickets for school groups to a selection of our main series concerts as part of the CAVATINA 25 scheme.
In partnership with our Partner Schools and Music Education Hubs, we lead a diverse range of activities to support selected schools in meeting their strategic priorities and aims through creative activity.
Partner Schools Programme
The Partner Schools Programme is a 3-year partnership involving Wigmore Hall, selected schools, and Music Education Hubs. Across the partnership, we collaborate with each Hub and school to devise a bespoke programme of work and opportunities which respond to the unique needs and aspirations of each school and help embed music into the culture, ethos and curriculum of schools. Through our long-term partnership and co-creation, the ultimate goal is for schools to become a ‘beacon school’ of high-quality musical practice, sharing their experience with other schools in the borough.
Thanks a million for the wonderful opportunity this project has offered our pupils. I can say without a shadow of doubt that this project has opened the door to more fun and exciting learning, in addition to working alongside excellent musicians. The singing skills have continued to improve, pupils’ performance levels and confidence is growing and the happiness and enthusiasm from staff to pupils is clearly visible. I can’t thank you enough for your vision of partnership with schools and we look forward to many exciting, uplifting and creative performances in the future. Thanks for your hard work and commitment to schools.
Headteacher, Partner School.
The first Partner School Programme was developed in 2015 – 2018 with Haringey Music Service and Risley Avenue Primary School, Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service and Lansbury Lawrence Primary School and the Tri-borough Music Hub and Flora Gardens Primary School. In 2021, Lansbury Lawrence Primary School went on to be the first school in Tower Hamlets to be awarded a Platinum Artsmark Award. Currently working in partnership with Haringey Music Service and Harrow Music Service, we are delighted that our Partner Schools for 2022 – 2025 are Brook House Primary School (Haringey) and Belmont School (Harrow).
We continue to measure the impact of this work with Sound Connections, using findings to inform our practice.
Wigmore Hall has continued to show itself to be a highly reflective organisation, demonstrating deep thinking around school engagement, and being flexible and able change its approaches as needed. It is a refreshing approach to programme design, and there is strong evidence that the WH is constantly improving and reviewing its understanding and knowledge of co-creation practice
Sound Connections Partner School Programme Summary Report May 2020
Opportunities to share practice across the borough is central to the programme, benefiting a greater number of teachers and pupils, fostering new relationships between cultural organisations, Music Education Hubs and schools, and providing a new model for working together.
We aim to inspire more schools to take a lead in strategically designing their own cultural education programme, drawing on the support of Music Education Hubs and cultural organisations.
Here is a short film about our Partner Schools Programmes:
Pilot project in an Alternative Provision setting
Having consulted with Tri-borough Music Hub, our local Music Education Hub, who identified a need for music engagement in Alternative Provision (AP) settings, we are excited to have launched a pilot project here in 2024. AP settings are for pupils who have been excluded from mainstream school, are at risk of exclusion or for another reason require alternative education.
Our creative music-making project is being led at Ormiston Bridge Academy in Hammersmith and Fulham, who provide education for up to 50 pupils, aged 5-16.
As the Headteacher reflects, projects like this are vital for young people who face many barriers to accessing music – some of the people who can benefit most from its transformative power:
They wouldn’t have gotten an opportunity to … play music before, we don’t have a music lesson here, we don’t have a music teacher. So they’re … getting opportunities to enrich their lives which maybe they wouldn’t have had previously. And I think that’s then giving them confidence and self-belief.
